Plans for investment in Muirhouse shopping centre and the surrounding area in the north of Edinburgh are being looked at by City of Edinburgh Council. The plans also include the introduction of a mix of new shops, restaurants, businesses and a civic square for community events, all designed to benefit the local community.
Muirhouse is widely considered one of the most deprived areas in Scotland’s capital and in desperate need of investment. The area has recently been used as a filming location for Trainspotting 2, the follow-up to the classic 1996 movie starring Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle.
The project is part of a wider regeneration of Muirhouse and nearby Pennywell and is one of Scotland’s largest improvement projects. The regeneration of the area has already received £150 million of public and private money, which has been invested in projects including a new school, an NHS-led partnership centre centre and over 700 new homes, with a special emphasis on affordable housing.
City of Edinburgh Council’s Housing Convener, Councillor Cammy Day, stated: “The Pennywell development is Scotland’s largest housing-led regeneration scheme which captures what we’re aiming for across the city – a range of affordable, energy efficient homes that are completed to the highest standard.
“We know there is a strong desire within the Pennywell and Muirhouse community to see the area transformed into a new ‘civic heart’ for the existing, new and emerging population.
“These proposals for a new local centre and community hub will make the area an attractive place where people wish to live, work and play and will serve future generations.”
The aim is for the area to welcome up to 2000 new residents and 180 workers over the next six to eight years.
