NHS prepares for future cyber attacks
A recent report by the National Audit Office says that the “unsophisticated” WannaCry attack could have been prevented. However, at the time the NHS failed to meet basic IT security best practice.
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Jeremy Hunt has shared the government’s concern about cyber security in the healthcare sector. He believes that the new technology which will be introduced post investment will help to “future-proof our NHS” against cyber threats, as he admits the healthcare sector still has a long way to go.
Speaking about the latest investments, he said:
“This new technology will ensure the NHS can use the latest and most resilient software available – something the public rightly expect.”
New investment
The government has already invested £60m to address key cyber security weaknesses. The latest allocation of £150m will be spread across three years.

- A new digital security operations centre will be launched to prevent, detect and respond to incidents
- There will be £21m to upgrade protective firewalls and network infrastructure at major trauma centre hospitals and ambulance trusts

- A new text messaging alert system will be introduced to transmit information even if internet and email services are down
